What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

I am an SME in HCL Technologies for the ScienceLogic SL1 monitoring tool and have five ScienceLogic SL1 customers in a shared environment. There was scope to manage the entire 60 customers from HCL Tech, but because the scope is limited and not advanced, many customers opted out for ScienceLogic SL1 as a tool. Scope of use cases - each PowerPack should be tested properly for alerting. With the help of the application team, the DB alerts should be tested. They should consult with the DB team and ask what alerting is required and how relevant it is with the PowerPack that ScienceLogic SL1 offers, and accordingly, this should be enhanced.
  • Ping monitoring and polling reports are very good. Customer-first looks for this feasibility and how closely it can monitor that is well defined in ScienceLogic SL1.
  • Collectors' connectivity with SL DB is very stable. We hardly see issues of any connectivity failing. Agentless is far better and easy to handle and use than other tools. The best part is plug and play type.
  • CDM monitoring, it really does well and has wise poll reporting.
  • The dashboard is really awesome. We use and showcase to customers their servers as a whole, and for one server, a lot of details can be checked under the performance graph.
  • Bulk Onboarding/Offboarding is so good in ScienceLogic SL1. Search criteria are matchless. ScienceLogic SL1 has such a beautiful, organized field.
  • Suppression alerts, FS is so well defined, easy and quick to use.
  • ScienceLogic SL1 has improved so much in defining license consumption, which shows license consumed against all items.
  • Log monitoring and event monitoring should be defined and should not be enabled with event ids. We have to create a duplicate Dynamic App if different events ids are to be enabled as per application. More visibility and descriptions should be included in the Log and Event id monitoring description.
  • Database monitoring should be enhanced, and more advanced features should be added, such as replication, DB mirroring, DB Sync, Log Shipping, etc. So far, with the Dynamic app, we can't monitor DB status. The same goes with virtual server addition, we don't get DB status alerts which is deadly required. The same goes for all the DB like Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, and others. Numerous features and capabilities should be there. You may take the example of CA UIM, which has more than 75 parameters to enable against DB. ScienceLogic SL1 is lacking badly in this area.
  • UNIX servers cluster monitoring is not that good, we can only monitor cluster nodes' status, but there are more that can be captured as part of features.
  • TOP 10 processes and services should be captured for CPU and Memory. We don't have such things yet that can be enabled or found in a server.
  • HADR, AS400 are majorly asked for by customers but till now it's not available.
  • Application deep level monitoring is very limited in scope, such as HTTP, DNS, AD, and others.
  • ScienceLogic SL1 reports don't work so well. They need to be worked on it for internal troubleshooting purposes.
  • Hardware, Backup, and Storage monitoring are very limited in scope, which should be increased.
  • Traps based monitoring should be encouraged more from ScienceLogic SL1.
  • Monitoring with advanced features of Active Directory, DNS servers, Exchange servers, etc., should be more in scope.
  • The most important thing, PowerPack, which is in ScienceLogic SL1, should be tested well and should be released only with the consent of the Application/DB team.
  • There should be a team who should work on Community PowerPack so that if the customer wants to make it and use it via general availability should be available.
  • Customer support and follow-up have gone down over the past two years as if they don't bother, which has a negative impact. Customer is big or small. SMEs who work ideally send out messages to other organizations about how good a tool is or how bad its support system is.
  • A quarterly training session should be organized, as in real terms, your ScienceLogic SL1 is driven by SMEs who work on your tool, and many of the wrong impressions are sent due to SMEs' ignorance even if the tool is good.
  • I see the big scope of ScienceLogic SL1 as a monitoring tool provided 10% of ScienceLogic SL1 product is improved. The demand for 10% is so much, and it's not good that it's the main reason your 90% good things are sidelined.
ScienceLogic SL1 is well suited for all the environments, provided what you have in the ScienceLogic SL1 portal should work with taking today's advanced features in mind. ScienceLogic SL1 has great scope for a shared support environment, but customers are not opting in due to its limitations. ScienceLogic SL1 should focus, and thorough discussions should be organized, with SMEs for more to add as part of advanced features.

I use ScienceLogic SL1 at my job at Kyndryl to provide monitoring services of IT infrastructure for clients and customer support teams.
  • SL1 provides monitoring for various databases.
  • SL1 can monitor all popular operating systems.
  • SL1 uses monitoring agents and agentless monitoring.
  • SL1 requires a lot of CPU resources.
  • User Interface is not intuitive.
  • Documentation is poorly organized.
ScienceLogic SL1 is good for cloud monitoring - main vendors are supported, and a lot of modern hardware is supported. There is lack of support of old operating systems and the agents may consume a lot of local resources. The SL1 system scales well and has good manufacturer support and has good price.

We use SL1 predominantly for Event Monitoring and overall health in our different customer environments. One of the business problems that we addressed by using SL1's process monitoring on servers via a custom dashboard, was to identify which application was causing high CPU usage and related processes. We created a custom dashboard that combined all the pieces of the puzzle together in one window, and we could focus our attention on what needed to be done, instead of trying to log onto to each server and see what was causing the problems. Creating dashboards in SL1 is quite easy and when there are issues in any of our customer environments, a dashboard can easily be put together, that highlights certain areas of technology, and this enables us to
  • Event Monitoring
  • Dashboards and creating custom Dashboards
  • Device Discovery
  • More freedom to create custom dashboards as on the previous versions we could do much more
  • The Performance TAB windows is too small and cannot be resized or maximized when looking at reports for "Overview", "File System" and any of those items.
  • There are not enough widgets to create stunning dashboard in AP2
  • The reporting feauture is a very untouched area.
In most of the scenarios I was able to assist users to view info pertaining to there specific case study. In cases where I was unable to help users or customers, it was a lack on our side, and not a problem with the product as we have not implemented all the functionality as I would have liked. SL1 is not a capacity tool, but it can be used to feed information into systems like BMC Truesight to do capacity reporting on.

We are using SL1 in our Network monitoring, it is helping us in monitoring our servers and knowing the status when the server status when they are in critical state, we are using in the integration aswell with ticketing tool. If the company is both large and small, SL1 can be used for monitoring both cases. There are lot of monitoring available already, you can use it and even we can customize or create it based on the requirement. We have monitoring for different types of devices like windows, linux etc. We have default polices we can use to monitor, we have reports, we have integration with emails as well to use. We have powerflow aswell to use, where we can integrate it with third party tools. We have topology view to use. We have powerpacks to use for monitoring, they get updated regularly in the monitoring point of view. Event SL1 portal also gets updated with the upgrades that makes the UI more customer friendly. We have dynamic application monitoring as well, which helps to monitor the devices based on the scripting. The Dynamic applications are present for different types of device classes, they are both OOB and customizable for monitoring.

ScienceLogic SL1 is being used for management and administration of Customer's Infrastructure (Servers and Network Elements).

Apart from Monitoring the Customer Infrastructure, SL1 needs to be integrated to data lake to ensure efficient reporting and limited load to the Monitoring Module. SL1 PowerFlow was used for this integration.

In the existing engagement, expectation was to migrate from old monitoring suite to SL1.

  • Custom Integrations via SL1 PowerFlow
  • Ability to configure Run Book Automations
  • Customize the Dynamic Applications as per requirement
  • Buggy Software. A lot of features which must have worked out of the box were fixed during the course of implementation. This led to a lot of delays in delivery.
  • Limited documentation for Custom Development in SL1 PowerFlow and/or ScienceLogic SL1 Monitoring Suite.
  • Example: There are no best practice recommendations for:
  • Custom Monitoring expected out of Scripts hosted on Agent-Based Systems.
  • Custom Development which would be required for Integrations configuration via SL1 PowerFlow
  • Sluggish Support: After logging a Support Case, it takes too long for resolution / response. Really strange that there's limited tracking despite escalations.
  • Professional Services Subscription
Appropriate if you are setting up a monitoring suite in new Infrastructure Environment.

Definitely NOT suited for Migration Projects. ScienceLogic SL1 cannot cater to a lot of monitoring requirements which already would have been configured in old monitoring suite. Plus, limited support for customizations and having to go to "Feature Requests" route makes in extremely complicated.

ScienceLogic SL1 is used to monitor the health of our devices. We primarily use events to monitor server resources, connectivity issues automation policy to meet our event conditions triggering an automatic action. If conditions are met an email is sent out and a ticket is raised and updated in our SNOW instance. The associated events also update our ticket status. Historically scripts were used to accomplish our monitoring needs. ScienceLogic SL1 has made our process more efficient with it automation.

ScienceLogic SL1 is better suited for distributed servers. Where it is lacking is network integration when comparing it to SolarWinds.

Sciencelogic is used for monitoring servers, hardware, databases, storages, containers and operating systems in our enviroment. It is a all in one tool for us, however it does come with some limitations due to having a broad scope. Overall it has been a good experience using this product
  • automations
  • integrations
  • customizable applications
  • Documentation
  • lack of training
  • lack of essential monitoring out of the box
  • slow external support. sometimes takes weeks to get a resolution.
This tool is aptly designed for routine monitoring tasks in daily business operations. However, adapting it to meet the needs of a large organization with over 1000 employees involves an extensive commitment of time. Expect to spend several months developing custom code, tailoring dynamic applications, and setting up automations to ensure it aligns well with the organization's scale and requirements.

We use ScienceLogic SL1 in our organization to serve effective monitoring solutions to our external customers. Our customers depend upon us for critical events/alerts related to their IT infrastructure gears and using SL1, we're able to provide them with a proactive monitoring solution that resolves an issue before an impact is noticed by the customer. There are very few monitoring solutions that can cater to a variety of Cloud platforms like Public Cloud (AWS, Azure) and private cloud simultaneously and SL1 addresses this business problem very well. Not only this, the ease with which the SL1 UI Operates is just commendable and pretty fast with zero to no latency. Being a multi-cloud company, it's important that we serve our customers with fanatical support and SL1 helps us achieve that every day.
  • Monitoring servers
  • Monitoring public cloud appliances
  • Ease of integration with ServiceNow
  • UI with artificial intelligence
  • Reporting
SL1 is best suited for scenarios where we want detailed IT infrastructure monitoring. Scenarios where it is less appropriate would be for basic monitoring like URL, Ping, etc.

Monitoring the environment includes Servers, Networks, Cloud, Applications, Storage, Database, and Operating system. Business problems to replace multiple monitoring tools with one solution. Scope of the tool to replace existing monitoring solutions and handling integrations with other monitoring and health check systems. Integrate with the existing ticketing system, and automate actions for resolving the issues.
  • Agentless
  • User-friendly
  • Run book automations
  • Event policies
  • Not everything migrated to AP2 from classic portal
  • Masking events related to time
  • Internal events cannot be modified
A single tool that can be used to monitor, event management, and incident management. Agentless monitoring is an added advantage where most of the other monitoring tools in the market need agents to perform monitoring. Root cause analysis, automated run book automation, build own dynamic applications to customize any tools/application monitoring

  • Log file monitoring is very versatile, could be useful to monitor basically anything for that you do not have special PP.
  • Overall Cost-Effective solution, transparent GUI, dashboards
  • SL support - during P1 issues, like SL DB cluster issues, they are providing very handy help
  • selfmonitoring - need to add detection of monitoring has stopped
  • guides, manuals, knowledge base - very misleading, not detailed, does not cover many situations
  • SL Support on daily issues - from experience, often not much helpful, the support case you raise for them is often not followed, replies are seldom, they try only to close the case ASAP without any solution, without asking you if this solution is ok for you
Almost perfect for OS monitoring. For some application you can use log file monitoring. It could have problems with specific technologies like cluster monitoring

Science logic helps our company to provide services to the customers in more easier and relevant ways. We can easily monitor any sort of devices on it in a very unique way. The design scope of a use case can be the enterprise, a specific system or a subsystem. Use cases that are used to describe the business process are typically of scope “enterprise”.
  • It better monitors every single and smallest things for the devices like CPU utilization, Thresholds, Memories etc.
  • Auto-ticketing for the alerts is the best part of it.
  • It helps to build relationship between one parent and many child devices.
  • It should only alert for the device/server which is down, not for all the other devices attached to the same affected devices.
  • Tabs should be in more organized manner instead.
  • Nothing more.
I would have experienced a lot many scenarios and found using Science logic, It makes our life easier to understand everything for the devices that are getting monitored there. we integrated ScienceLogic SL1 to streamline our IT operations. We used its unified monitoring for a clear view of our hybrid IT environment, automating asset discovery which saved significant manual effort. The platform's AI-driven analytics improved our incident response, dependency mapping aided in informed decision-making during migrations, and its capacity planning tools optimized our resource utilization. Overall, SL1 transformed our IT processes, making them more proactive and efficient.

ScienceLogic SL1 is used as our Primary Monitoring Platform, this system replaced out dating Nimsoft platform. the system is very flexible and can be tweaked to our needs / customer requestes for the most part.
  • Grouping of Devices for central management
  • communicates with Service Now very well
  • Easily search customers or devices
  • Dashboards could do with being more "out of the box" friendly
  • I constantly switch bewteen the new AP2 and classic view for different functions
  • different user privileges could do with being more generic or simpler
The fact you are able to spin up some "data collectors" on the VDC / customer environment is great - this means you do not need to logon and install an agent on all the machines

  • Enterprise visibility
  • Monitoring
  • Integrations
  • AIOps
  • Reporting
  • Automation
  • RCA

Scope is 360 degrees of visibility across the enterprise.
  • Monitoring of Devices
  • Integrations to 3rd party software
  • Automations
  • Reporting is robust but not user friendly unless proper training
  • Lacks Network Flow Analytics out of the box
I think ScienceLogic SL1 is well suited for monitoring on-premise, cloud and IoT devices. It provides robust reporting, integration, visualization and automation.

ScienceLogic SL1 is used within our organization as a tool for Infrastructure monitoring.

As an MSP we required to upgrade our tooling to allow us to properly enable monitoring of a customers infrastructure and alert at the correct levels from a device to a business service impact. Without ScienceLogic SL1 we were only ever able to monitor at a device by device basis and not see the entire overall impact a device outage could have on a business service and the business as a whole. We are also extending the usage of this to start automation of some of the more basic events and alerts so that we can attempt auto remediation & resolution on simple recurring issues. ScienceLogic SL1 has also given us the ability to properly look at root causes as we have more data from the various sources and can look at the events that occurred for those high priority issues in greater depth.
  • Automations
  • Discovery
  • Deep Monitoring of different OS/Network Devices
  • Some of the User interface still requires work
  • Monitoring of non common hardware
I think ScienceLogic SL1 is very good at being able to properly paint a business service overlay picture which gives greater depth of root cause and impact on what an outage will cause to the company.

We use ScienceLogic as a monitoring tool to assist other companies manage and monitor their IT Estate. I personally assist with creating reports, Dynamic Applications, Run Book Automations and integrations into their other systems. I have to assist with custom requests, and mostly focus on their reports and integrations into their other monitoring systems.
  • Best overall coverage of montioring different technologies.
  • Easy to use in any environment
  • Customizable being able to generate your own reports, dashboards, DA's, RBA's, etc.
  • Have very good out of the box integrations with other monitoring solutions such as ServiceNow
  • Always improving and regularly releasing new versions and upgrades to the system/DA's.
  • Interactive community
  • Their reporting is difficult and complicated to create your own. This can also be moved to a newer language (AP2 View)
  • Being able to use their API/GQL with SSO
SL would be great in most environments, as they cover a very wide range of technologies. There platform is easy to use, and the out of the box functionality covers most of what you would need in your environment.

I would say the environments where SL is difficult to use, is where there are a lot of security rules regarding firewalls, ldap and SSO. There are some features that does not always work across the board. However, even in these environments does SL do a great job and they are happy to assist getting the functionality you need..

ScienceLogic SL1 is used to monitor devices across Datacom and our customers. Enabling alerts to events, ticket creation etc.
  • It is effective for monitoring common devices
  • The ap2 interface is generally pleasant to use
  • PowerFlow
  • Support - time to resolution
  • Support - fast access to engineering
  • Cohesive UI/UX - why does the classic UI still exist?
  • Bug finding - we feel like glorified beta testers (see comments about support)
  • UX - if you have to explain how things work, you've failed. e.g. there are pages where three buttons all have the same text and all do different things!
  • utilisation of AI across the board.
In my experience, it seems to be well suited to basic monitoring. I think if you need anything more than that, including needing a system not riddled with bugs, prompt support, or a cohesive user experience - look elsewhere

  • It monitors our devices and reports on the detections we have created.
  • monitors web endpoints
  • can handle bespoke complex monitors
  • discovery of devices automatically
  • Most of the things I can think of have now been addressed in this new release.
  • Documentation could be less ambiguous sometimes
  • More active to detecting system alerts and having them sorted before we have need to inform them SAAS
This is well suited for medium to large business and not really needed for small companies.

Used in our own organisation and deployed on customer estates, It provides a uniform way of computer estate monitoring and capacity and asset management,
  • Easy to configure for monitoring devices of the same make and model.
  • Straightforward to develop powerpacks for new or updated devices.
  • Easy to configure for setting alerts on devices and device models.
  • Easy to create dashboards for device or service monitoring.
  • Creating powerpacks from scratch for new devices may be straightforward but will rarely be easy. Rewarding when completed, but not easy.
  • Developer documentation needs a rethink. While the information may be there (it isn't always) it is not easy to find. This is not helped by using different terms for the same things.
  • A developer console/dashboard for monitoring data collection from powerpacks instances without having to switch webpages or have to monitor multiple webpages.
Before starting anything in the dashboards and indeed in the data collection, careful thought, design and planning is essential before starting. All that effort is worthwhile as developing powerpacks and dashboards is then much clearer and straightforward.
1. When we needed to monitor an application that comprised of several devices and network components, it was easy to set this up and, after a little training, easy for the operations team to use it.
2. When we needed to monitor part of a cloud it was not so easy to configure, but once that was done, it was very easy to use for the operations team as it followed the same style as the application monitoring.

We use ScienceLogic SL1 for monitoring and alerting critical IT infrastructure, including cloud computing, networking, Windows and Linux servers, websites, bandwidth usage metrics, and SSL certificates. Nearly all of our IT infrastructure is supported by SL1 power packs and dynamic applications, including SNMP and API monitoring and alerting endpoints.
  • Integrations with ServiceNow for CMDB population and alert escalation.
  • Customizable collections of performance and capacity metrics.
  • The ability to customize event policies for alerts.
  • Native multi-tenant features and functionality in the platform.
  • The legacy EM7 interface can be overwhelming with configuration options.
  • RBAC roles and policies can be difficult to manage for larger organizations.
  • PowerPacks are required for nearly every vendor's platform, which requires software development resources in-house, or having to work with ScienceLogic to request and prioritize support for new vendors.
ScienceLogic SL1 is well-suited for organizations with mature software development and/or DevOps teams so that SL1 can be used to its full potential without having to rely on ScienceLogic's product development release cycles. Organizations without in-house software development resources will have a much steeper learning curve, especially businesses with IT infrastructure not already supported by SL1.
